Description
Sitting in the smoke-filled basin of Crater lake, Wizard Island looks somewhat mystical ... as if there is a wizard brewing up some potion. Crater Lake National Park is a fascinating place, even when there are fires and smoke in the area. Wizard Island, a cinder cone, was formed after the initial collapse of Mount Mazama as water was filling the basin of Crater Lake. Initially a land bridge existed between the rim of Crater Lake and Wizard Island, which allowed animals to populate the Island. As the basin filled in with more water, the land bridge was flooded leaving the animals cut off. So, over these many years, unique species have developed suited to the island life.
